Key Elements of Personalized Learning
Personalized learning centers each learner’s strengths, needs, interests and goals while maintaining high expectations for growth and rigor. These key elements describe the conditions, structures and practices that enable learners to take ownership of their learning, progress through meaningful learning experiences and demonstrate mastery in ways that reflect who they are and how they learn best.
LEARNER AGENCY
Learners feel empowered to take ownership of the learning process by embracing goal setting, reflecting on their strengths and challenges, building self-efficacy, and leveraging their voice to advocate for unique needs, preferences, and interests.
RELATIONSHIPS
Learners engage in collaborative learning experiences where the structured environment fosters safe and meaningful social connections that allow them to identify and communicate their needs, preferences, and aspirations, encouraging them to develop their intellectual, physical, and emotional well-being.
CONTINUUM OF LEARNING
Learners have access to progressions of prioritized standards and/or competencies that identify the essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions they will be expected to demonstrate throughout their educational career and beyond.
LEARNER SUPPORTS
Learners have equitable access to a variety of personalized resources and strategies that meet their individual needs when they need them.
DEMONSTRATION OF LEARNING
Learners progress along a continuum of learning based on mastery of clearly defined, transparent, and measurable prioritized standards and/or competencies. Learners have voice in how and when they show evidence of learning.
RELEVANT LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Learners engage in rigorous learning experiences designed to support and grow learners’ unique strengths, preferences, goals, and interests.
